Paper straws fail in two ways: they go soft before the drink is finished, or they are too narrow for what is in the glass. Shape and bore matter more than material once plastic is off the table.

A jumbo straw is the one most sites get wrong. A milkshake or a bubble tea needs the wider bore, and a standard straw simply will not work.
